Understanding Online Casino Bonuses

The rise of and proliferation of online casinos has seen a modest few turn into legions, both in terms of the players participating and the available sites to choose from. As always, competition works better for the end user as the individual companies have to pull out all the stops to separate themselves from the pack. That could be through marketing or media strategy, by recruiting big names as ambassadors, or by offering bonuses and promotions.

It is not always easy to see through the promotional hype to the actual value of the offers, especially if you’re not a regular. What can, at face value, seem like great value can turn out to be much less worthwhile. Different wagering requirements and withdrawal clauses can come into play, as well as restrictions on use. We will take a quick look at how to decipher what bonuses make the most of your play.

Check that your bets are making a difference

If you’re going to take a casino up on one of their bonuses, make sure that you’re playing the right games. It sounds simple but you’d be surprised how many miss it. For example, if it’s an online roulette bonus, check if it applies across all the different types of roulette a casino offers. European roulette, speed roulette, live roulette…the list goes on! If you’ve got to spend 10 of your own chips to release a bonus, make sure that you’re playing on a table that qualifies. Always read the small print.

Wagering requirements

Most bonuses are to draw players to the casino and to give them a chance to play a wider selection of games than they might be able to with their original funds. Say you get a 100% deposit bonus to double your money, that’s theoretically twice the amount of gaming you can do. However, very rarely is the bonus in terms of cash and therefore any winnings will be held until certain wagering requirements are met. That deposit and bonus may have to be wagered from as little as once, right up to 60 times with some bookies. At once, you have a realistic chance of seeing some of the bonus back as real money. At 60 times? Not so much. Always check what the requirements are before you start playing. If you’re expecting a return and not just playing for fun then stick to lower numbers.

Free spins

With online slots growing in popularity, one way for a site to draw people in is with the offer of free spins. We all like things for free so you’re fairly certain to get a response. Often, free spins will be tied to a deposit and staking amount. You may get 10 free spins from $20 of play, for example. Any winnings from these spins may go straight to your cash balance, whilst others may be subject to play-through rules. Always check before you play!

Cashback

Some casinos offer ways to mitigate your losses. New games might give a 100% no risk play just to get people to try it out, whilst others are likely to be between 10%-50%. True cashback is funds that aren’t tied and could be withdrawn if you wanted to, whilst others are subject to more wagering and are therefore of less value. Remember, though, these bonuses require that you lose money in the first place, which is not ideal (but a risk we all run!).

These are the most common bonuses in shifting times of the online casino. There are many more variations on these themes. The best advice is to always read the terms and conditions clearly. If it seems too good to be true, then it might well be.
